The Mardin Castle, also popularly known as “Eagle Nest,” has hosted numerous kings and sultans including Subari, Sumerian, Babylonian, Mitanni, Assyrian, Persian, Roman, Byzantine, Ummayad, Abbasid, Hamdani, Seljuk, Artuqid, Qaraqoyunlu, Akkoyunlu and Safavid rulers and the Ottoman sultan.

Evidences have been found, which suggest that the castle was once used for residential purposes. Moreover, huge quantities of food and ammunition were stored in the castle’s storage rooms.

Mardin Castle, which has hosted numerous kings and sultans, was never conquered by other armies. The castle, situated at an elevation of 1,085 meters, was known as the “Eagle’s Nest,” with strategic importance. The castle has been awaiting renovation for exactly 218 years.
